It's Personal

Melissa Murphy

This Christmas we have our son with us and he’s happy and healthy.  We have caring friends like you to thank!
It should have been the happiest day of my life.  Instead, it was the most terrifying.
In my mind’s eye I’m back in the delivery room at Oakville Hospital.  A nurse is standing by my head murmuring words of reassurance.  “You did great,” she says.  “You’re a mom.”
But I don’t hear my baby cry.  My arms remain empty.  I glance at my husband, Nick, and he’s stone-faced, trying desperately to hold it together.  Our little boy came into the world not breathing!
Thankfully, the amazing team at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is prepared for any crisis.  They have the tools they need to save precious lives – thanks to you.
After Owen was born, he was rushed to the Special Care Nursery for life-saving care. That’s where I met my little son for the first time.  I was so happy to see him but I was also terrified.  Owen had been intubated and hooked up to vital equipment.  I could barely see his face.
I would have given anything to hold Owen.  Instead, I rubbed his tiny hands and back, whispering words of love.  I told him everything was going to be okay even though I didn’t know if it would be.
Seeing Owen so small and helpless, I wondered if he’d ever come home with us.
But my son was alive.  The team at Oakville Hospital saved him. Owen couldn’t have gotten better care anywhere else. I got the best care too.  The nurses were amazing and empathetic.
Then there is you!  Without your support, the hospital wouldn’t have the resources and equipment they need to improve and save lives like Owen’s.
Like you, I’m a proud supporter of our community hospital. And this December, I’ll be beaming with pride when our new hospital – the one that you and I helped create – opens for the entire community.
In order to ensure our new hospital can keep up with changing technologies and the needs of people in our community, it’s critical that we continue to support it.
That’s why your special holiday gift today is so important. You’ll help ensure our hospital is prepared – now and into the future – when even the tiniest patients are counting on them.  You’ll make sure that new moms like me, and newborns like Owen, always have an excellent team of doctors and nurses available in urgent, life-threatening situations.
Your support has given Nick and me a special reason to celebrate this Christmas.  You see, we have our son at home with us.  Today, at 20 months, Owen is happy, healthy and the greatest gift we could ever ask for.
Thank you for everything you did for my family.  And today, during this season of giving, I hope you’ll find it in your heart to do the same for other families in dire need by making a special gift.
Please be generous once again this holiday season.  Your donation is a gift of hope for every person who will turn to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for world-class care and treatment. You’ll give even the sickest and smallest patients the greatest gift there is – the chance to spend the holidays at home with their family.
Wishing you a happy holiday season,
Melissa Murphy, grateful mom
