OAKVILLE, May 6, 2014 – The Birmingham Bank Bed Challenge ended on Sunday, May 4th with an exciting race to the finish line. The month-long fundraising initiative from Oakville’s six major banks, BMO Bank of Montreal, CIBC, HSBC Bank of Canada, Royal Bank, Scotiabank, and TD Canada Trust, raised more than $133,000 to help fund patient beds for the new Oakville Hospital. Hospital equipment, such as beds, are not funded by the provincial government.

The Bank Bed Challenge Race Day took place on Lakeshore Road East in downtown Oakville. This year the BBBC asked local businesses to join them for race day and Jack Astor’s Restaurant, Oakview Funeral Home, Budd’s BMW and McDonald’s were eager to participate for the coveted fastest bed and best decorated awards. The Oakville Community came to the event to cheer on the participants and enjoyed a free pancake breakfast courtesy of Sunset Grill and the Knights of Columbus and free coffee from McDonald’s.

This year, we also introduced the Kids’ Stroller Race, along with activities hosted by each Bank. Budd’s BMW won the prize for Best Decorated Bed while Scotiabank took home top honours in Fastest Bed and Top Fundraiser.

The Bank Bed Challenge was launched by former Scotiabank president and Oakville Hospital Foundation board member, Bruce Birmingham who recognized the growing need for hospital beds. The event is named in his honour.
