Helliwell Foundation's $500,000 Donation to Oakville Hospital Foundation Doubles Thanks to Matching

Posted: October 19, 2012
OAKVILLE (October 16, 2012) – The Paul B. Helliwell Foundation is donating $500,000 to the new Oakville Hospital, a major gift to the “It All Starts Here” campaign that will double in value thanks to a 100% match from private family foundation, Amarna.

“We are deeply grateful to the Paul B. Helliwell Foundation for its generosity and for sharing our vision to create an innovative hospital environment with a focus on health and healing,” said Lilian Scime, Vice President, Corporate Services, Finance and Information Technology for Halton Healthcare Services.

The gift from the Helliwell Foundation and matching funds will be used to equip the Rapid Diagnostic Lab in Oakville’s new hospital. In recognition of this gift to the campaign, the Microbiology Lab in the new Oakville Hospital will be named in honour of Mr. Paul Helliwell.

The Rapid Diagnostic Lab is one of five laboratories that will be housed at the Oakville Hospital and will provide regionalized services to the three sites – Oakville, Milton and Georgetown Hospitals – under Halton Healthcare Services. The Rapid Diagnostic Lab currently processes more than 315,500 test results annually, a number that is anticipated to grow to close to 600,000 by 2015, more than 800,000 by 2019 and more than 1 million by 2024.

The Rapid Diagnostic Lab in the new Hospital will consist of several work areas to include incubation, plating and staining, and reading areas. It will also enable healthcare providers to improve turnaround times for testing and reduce the number of tests sent to other centres. The lab will also offer dedicated rooms for molecular testing, fluorescent microscopy, an increase in staff, and include the latest technology and equipment. Much of the equipment that is needed today is in direct response to our rapidly diversifying communities, growth in antibiotic resistant infectious diseases and tremendous growth and advancement in diagnostic and identification equipment.

“We are delighted to make this gift to help equip the new Oakville Hospital and improve patient care in the community,” said John Jenah, President of the Paul B. Helliwell Foundation. “The new Hospital promises to be an innovative centre for medical excellence and it was important for the Helliwell Foundation to support it.”

Mr. Paul B. Helliwell was the Chairman of Gamma Foundries Limited in Richmond Hill, Cousins Currie Limited in Woodbridge, along with Reid Milling Limited, Power Lite Development and Scancraft Limited. Throughout his successful career he was also recognized as a caring man who generously supported many worthy organizations and causes. Through his Foundation, under the direction of long-time friend John Jenah, Mr. Helliwell’s legacy continues.

The Oakville Hospital Foundation is partnering with the community to fund essential equipment for Oakville’s Hospital to enable high quality patient care. Generous support from the community is needed to help the Foundation achieve its $60 million campaign goal and equip the state-of-the-art healthcare facility scheduled to open in December 2015.
