A Closer Look at Sustainability at OTMH

Every year, Earth Day (which takes place on April 22nd) invites us to reflect on the ways we connect, protect, and enhance our planet.

At Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH), these aren’t just annual considerations—they’re built into every facet of our hospital’s operations.

With our hospital’s LEED gold-certified facilities, sustainability has been woven into the very fabric of healthcare here in Oakville, ensuring that every patient receives care that’s as green as it is comprehensive. We’re incredibly proud of the achievement and believe it’s a reflection of our hospital’s deep commitment to the future of healthcare and the environment.

This recognition by the Canada Green Building Council underscores our proactive approach in reducing environmental impact while delivering exceptional care.

The journey to gold certification was marked by several sustainable milestones:

  • High-efficiency faucets, toilets, and showers to help reduce water consumption, a critical factor in sustainable building.
  • Low-VOC materials for paints, adhesives, and sealants were chosen, enhancing indoor air quality and ensuring a safer environment for both patients and staff.
  • Mechanical systems equipped with eco-friendly refrigerants that do not deplete the ozone layer, ensuring the building remains cool while protecting our environment.
  • Our facilities were designed to encourage the use of public transit, cycling, and alternative fuel vehicles

So, what do things like safer paint and more efficient faucets have to do with patient care and community?

We’re glad you asked! The sustainable practices at OTMH go beyond environmental benefits. They contribute to a healthier, more supportive environment for healing.

Patients and their families appreciate knowing they are cared for in a facility that prioritizes both their health and the health of the planet. Feedback from the community has underscored the positive impact of these green initiatives, enhancing community support and engagement.

So, this Earth Day, we celebrate the remarkable strides our hospital has made in sustainability, thanks to the ongoing support from our donors. Your commitment enables us to continue improving our facilities in ways that care for our patients and our planet alike.
