Making the Transplant Process Easier for Patients

For people who need a kidney transplant, the testing and referrals can feel endless –  multiple appointments, long waits, and plenty of back-and-forth travel.

To lift that burden, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) created the One-Day Workup, letting patients finish every required test in a single visit. Care moves faster, stress drops, and families spend less time on the road.

The idea came from close to home. Gail Burns, OTMH’s Director of Nephrology, watched her son Brandon navigate the usual maze of tests while waiting for the kidney his brother Hunter would donate. Their experience inspired our Nephrology team to design a faster, kinder pathway, making OTMH the first hospital in Ontario to offer a same-day transplant workup.

Behind the scenes, this innovation relies on strong diagnostics and lab tools that deliver quick, accurate results. Thanks to donor support, OTMH has the technology and space to make it happen, turning a family’s challenge into a province-leading solution.
