Protecting Your Little Ones During RSV Season
- Share This Story
As the colder months settle in, so does the increased risk of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)—a common but potentially serious respiratory infection for infants and young children. RSV season, typically running from November to April, is a time of heightened concern for parents, but Halton Healthcare is here to help.
The Halton Healthcare Paediatric RSV Immunization Clinic at Milton District Hospital is now open, providing essential protection for infants during this critical time. This clinic is part of Ontario’s expanded RSV prevention program, which ensures that more families can access free immunizations for their children.
What is RSV?
RSV infects the lungs and airways and is a leading cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under two. While many children experience mild symptoms like coughing and fever, younger infants, particularly those under six months, can face severe complications requiring hospitalization.
How Can Immunization Help?
The clinic offers Beyfortus (Nirsevimab), a one-time preventative antibody injection that provides 80-90% protection against severe RSV infections for up to six months. It is safe, effective, and designed to shield infants during their first RSV season.
Eligible patients include:
- Newborns and infants born during RSV season.
- High-risk toddlers up to age two, such as those with chronic lung conditions or weakened immune systems.
For expectant parents, immunization can also begin in the womb with the Abrysvo (RSVpreF) vaccine, which protects infants until six months of age.

Why This Matters
