Your Better Care Story

In December 2024, a new kind of prescription became available to residents of Halton: time spent in nature. Thanks to an innovative partnership between Halton Healthcare, PaRx, and Conservation Halton, patients can now receive nature prescriptions granting up to ten free visits to Conservation Halton Parks.

Imagine stepping into a world of scenic trails, tranquil lakes, and breathtaking waterfalls—all while improving your physical and mental well-being. From peaceful walks through the woods to wildlife spotting and photography, this program provides countless ways to experience the proven health benefits of spending time outdoors.

A Prescription for a Healthier Community

“This partnership with PaRx provides greater access to nature and creates pathways to better health and a deeper connection with our environment,” said Chandra Sharma, President & CEO of Conservation Halton. “It’s a perfect example of our commitment to both ecological preservation and community well-being.”

Backed by science, PaRx, an initiative of the BC Parks Foundation, empowers healthcare providers to prescribe nature as a tool for preventive and therapeutic care. Studies show that time outdoors can lower blood pressure, boost mental health, and even extend life expectancy.

Halton Healthcare Leads the Way

As the first hospital system in Canada to partner with PaRx, Halton Healthcare is proud to champion this nature-based approach to healthcare. Through its collaboration with the Connected Care Halton Ontario Health Team (CCHOHT), the initiative connects primary care physicians across the region, ensuring that even more patients can benefit from this powerful and sustainable wellness tool.

“Spending more time in nature has incredible health benefits,” said Dr. Stephen Chin, Interim Vice President of Medical Affairs at Halton Healthcare. “This program allows health professionals to prescribe something truly transformative for our patients. Nature prescriptions complement the care we already provide, offering an accessible and sustainable way to improve the health of our community.”

Community Support and Advocacy

This collaboration wouldn’t have been possible without the vision and advocacy of Adam van Koeverden, Member of Parliament for Milton. A passionate supporter of outdoor activity and mental well-being, MP van Koeverden introduced the PaRx program to Halton earlier this year.

“This is a game-changer for our community,” said van Koeverden. “It encourages people to get outside, stay active, and connect with nature, which promotes both physical and mental resilience while fostering environmental stewardship.”

Discover the Magic of Halton Parks

With eight unique parks to explore, Conservation Halton offers something for everyone. Whether it’s a quiet hike to a breathtaking waterfall, a stroll around a tranquil meromictic lake, or a visit to the Raptor Centre, each visit promises an opportunity to connect with nature and recharge.

This partnership is more than just a prescription—it’s a movement. Conservation Halton joins a growing list of organizations across Canada bringing the PaRx vision to life. Together, we’re creating a healthier community, one nature-filled adventure at a time.
