National Volunteer Week 2026 Better Care Story

Every year, people choose to give their time to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and to the community it serves. Some staff the front desk. Some sit on committees that guide how donations are spent. Some help shape the strategic direction of the foundation itself. The forms that volunteer commitment takes are more varied than most people realize, and the cumulative effect runs deeper than any single number can capture.

This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re pausing to look at what that collective presence actually makes possible, and to say that OTMH would not be the hospital it is without the people who give their time to it.

A Legacy That Began in 1949

The roots of volunteering at OTMH run deep. When a Volunteer Auxiliary was established at the hospital in 1949, it set in motion something that has only grown stronger over the decades. Seventy-seven years later, 758 active volunteers keep that tradition alive, greeting visitors at the front desk, transporting patients in wheelchairs, transferring calls, supporting patient care, and even bringing music into the hospital. Their presence is woven into the daily rhythm of OTMH in ways that patients and families feel, even when they don’t know to name it.

The People Behind Our Events

Volunteering at OHF extends well beyond the hospital’s walls. Across 10 event committees, dedicated volunteers plan and execute the fundraising events that bring our community together and generate vital support for OTMH, from golf tournaments and galas to sporting events and more. These volunteers generously give their time and expertise, connecting the broader Oakville community to the hospital’s mission year after year.

Leadership as Service

Volunteering also happens in the boardroom. At OHF, approximately 50 board and committee members, serving across Stewardship, DEI, FRAI, Governance, and the Board, give their professional expertise and strategic guidance to ensure the foundation operates with integrity and purpose. This form of contribution often goes unrecognized as volunteering, but it shapes every decision we make.

Behind every statistic on this page is a person who chose to show up, not because they had to, but because this hospital and this community matter to them. That choice, made by volunteers over 77 years, has quietly shaped the care that patients and families receive here.

To every volunteer who has walked through these doors, joined a meeting, or given their expertise to our work: thank you. What you’ve built here is real, and it lasts.
